Granting Criteria & Application Questions

Granting Criteria

1.Grants are to help take practicing artists to the next level in their professionalism.

2. You must be a practicing artist demonstrating a vital engagement with the DTES community. Preference will be given to those living & creating their art in the DTES, however each application will be considered for its unique circumstances.

3. This is the first of a 2-step application process. If you are chosen in this round by the Community Advisory Committee, you will be contacted for some more information including proof of work & project budget.

4. Grants are for artists who can demonstrate a history of their original art practice. Grants are open to individuals & groups, with a cap of up to $1000. Grants may range from $500 - $1000.

5. Grants are not intended for subsistence purposes, and artists may not pay themselves a salary.

6. All successful applicants are expected to present their work publicly by Nov. 30/09.

7. Artwork must adhere to acceptable community standards. We will not help promote material that could harm an individual or group.

8. If you would like your proposal material returned, they must be picked up by July 22/09.

9. All presentation materials must be picked up before Dec 20/09.

Important Information

1. This is the first of a two-step application process. If your initial application is chosen by the Community Advisory Committee, you will be contacted in mid-June. You will then be asked to complete a Second Step Proposal, which will include proof of original artwork, a project budget and timeline. The deadline to complete and submit this Second Step Proposal will be July 8/11. Successful proposals will be announced in mid-July.

2. To ensure the continued funding of this program, grant recipients will be asked to share their experiences about their projects and the program as a whole with an evaluator.

3. Grantees will have the opportunity to be included in Vancouver Foundation’s website along with last year’s grant recipients. To view this online gallery visit:

Granting Criteria

Here are the Granting Criteria:

1. These grants are for individual practicing artists living and/or creating their art in the DTES.

2. You must demonstrate a history of original art practice. Grants are not intended for ‘start-up’ purposes.

3. Grants are not intended for subsistence purposes. Artists cannot pay themselves a salary. However, they may hire others to help achieve the goals of their project (for example: web designers, actors, lighting techs, recording engineers, etc.).

4. Artwork must adhere to acceptable community standards. We will not promote material that could harm an individual or group.

5. No more than $200 of the artist’s total budget may be spent on either capital costs or educational/instructional courses integral to the proposed project.

6. Those who have previously been awarded grants in 2009-10, may apply again in 2011. Artists may apply only once per year, for one grant. Those applying for more than one grant will be disqualified. Artists who apply and also appear to be a beneficiary on another’s application (for example, being paid as a musician on a CD project), risk having one or both applications disqualified.

7. The deadline for submitting applications is 4:00 PM, Monday, May 30/ 2011. Late applications will not be accepted. No exceptions.

8. All successful applicants are expected to present their work publicly by Feb 28, 2012. Opportunity for presentation may be available at the final group show planned for February 2012.
