DTES Small Arts Grants Program: May 2010

We have some great news...Hank Bull, Executive Director of Centre A (Vancouver International Centre for Contemporary Asian Art), has agreed to host and MC our Celebration as a one-night event on Tuesday, June 29/2010.

Centre A is a large gallery space strategically located between Gastown and Chinatown and could easily accommodate our multimedia needs and allow us the freedom to do on-site sales. Also, Hank has a lot of experience in pulling these type of events off, and brings a level of fun and excitement to them.

I hope you will be able to join us for this celebratory event which will be promoted widely to arts and community organizations and to potential funders of the grant program. If you are interested in participating, please let me know by Wednesday, May 19th how you would like to showcase your work. In order to coordinate some 60 plus artists we need specifics as to what you plan to exhibit/display. Please forward additional information.

Important Information

1. This is the first of a two-step application process. If your initial application is chosen by the Community Advisory Committee, you will be contacted in mid-June. You will then be asked to complete a Second Step Proposal, which will include proof of original artwork, a project budget and timeline. The deadline to complete and submit this Second Step Proposal will be July 8/11. Successful proposals will be announced in mid-July.

2. To ensure the continued funding of this program, grant recipients will be asked to share their experiences about their projects and the program as a whole with an evaluator.

3. Grantees will have the opportunity to be included in Vancouver Foundation’s website along with last year’s grant recipients. To view this online gallery visit:

Granting Criteria

Here are the Granting Criteria:

1. These grants are for individual practicing artists living and/or creating their art in the DTES.

2. You must demonstrate a history of original art practice. Grants are not intended for ‘start-up’ purposes.

3. Grants are not intended for subsistence purposes. Artists cannot pay themselves a salary. However, they may hire others to help achieve the goals of their project (for example: web designers, actors, lighting techs, recording engineers, etc.).

4. Artwork must adhere to acceptable community standards. We will not promote material that could harm an individual or group.

5. No more than $200 of the artist’s total budget may be spent on either capital costs or educational/instructional courses integral to the proposed project.

6. Those who have previously been awarded grants in 2009-10, may apply again in 2011. Artists may apply only once per year, for one grant. Those applying for more than one grant will be disqualified. Artists who apply and also appear to be a beneficiary on another’s application (for example, being paid as a musician on a CD project), risk having one or both applications disqualified.

7. The deadline for submitting applications is 4:00 PM, Monday, May 30/ 2011. Late applications will not be accepted. No exceptions.

8. All successful applicants are expected to present their work publicly by Feb 28, 2012. Opportunity for presentation may be available at the final group show planned for February 2012.
